DSU-day: save the date

On the 1st of November, 9am-4pm, the Doctoral Student Union will arrange a day devoted to PhD-students. Vice-Chancellor Kerstin Tham, the newly appointed Doctoral Education and Research Officer Christian Stråhlman, as well as SULF will visit us. It will be a day devoted to learn more about your rights, obligations, possibilities, and future as doctoral students at Malmö University.

A detailed program will be published but until then: save November 1!

Vacancies!

It is important for us doctoral students to be represented in committees, collegiums and boards at both central and faculty level.

TS & KS: Right now we are looking for two doctoral representatives: one at the Research Board/Forskningsnämnden (FNN) at the Faculty of Technology and Society (TS) and one at the Faculty Board/Fakultetsstyrelsen at the Faculty of Culture and Society (KS).

HS: We are looking for a President (ordförande) for the Doctoral collegium at Health and Society (HS) to get the collegium running.

A doctoral representative at a ‘Research Board’ or ‘Faculty Board’ gets refunded 10 working days/year. As President for a Doctoral collegium you get refunded 20 working days/year. It’s a win-win situation: you get to help improve the doctoral education at Malmö University and represent your colleagues, while extending your PhD time. This is helpful for people that would like to do something else besides teaching or do not get offered teaching opportunities. Of course there is work to be done, but the remunerated hours are generous. (Remember that 10 days are 80 hours and this means two weeks of extension). All doctoral students employed at Malmö university are entitled to the prolongation.

Welcome to 2nd DSU breakfast + annual meeting!

All PhDs are invited to the second Doctoral Student Union breakfast and annual meeting on January 26th 2016, between 09.00-11.00 in room NIA0404 in the Niagara building. The DSU will provide a breakfast and an opportunity to mingle with Ph.D. colleagues.

From 09.15-10.00, Research Support (Forskarservice) will give a short presentation on how they can help PhDs to apply for grants and there will be an opportunity for questions and discussion on this topic. You are welcome to submit your nominations at valberedning-dsu@mah.se indicating contact details (name, email, phone number, faculty and department). All positions relating to the Doctoral Student Union Board are paid by Malmö University (in other words, your Ph.D. will be extended by the amount of time you work on the Board).

Please also try to let us know whether you plan to attend by giving a short reply to doktorandkaren@mah.se at least a day before the meeting, so that we make sure to order the right amount of food. Members are also invited to send in other points to discuss at the annual meeting (see agenda below). Please also send these requests to doktorandkaren@mah.se, again, no later than the day before the meeting.

What did we do in 2015?

We are pleased to inform you of two proposals were put forward during 2015. The proposals both aiming to create more dynamic and reliable environment for all PhDs at MAH are currently being discussed within different boards at the university. First, as we had set in our activity plan, the goal for this year was to continue the work to appoint a “doktorandombudsman” at Malmö university. Accordingly, using the information and advice received from different sources the DSU presented an official proposal and recommendation for creation of a doctoral student ombudsman position at Malmö University. Second, the DSU formulated a letter on usage of English at MAH to improve inclusion of international PhD students. The letter highlights the importance of internationalization process at MAH and proposes some halfway solutions and possibility of using both Swedish and English at our work environment. Finally it is our hope that as the result of official conversations on mentioned issues positive changes and improvements will take place during 2016.

That being said, we need your support to achieve our mission. Looking forward to seeing you all at the annual meeting.

Best regards,
The board
